Central Texas Storm Debris Disposal

Smart Austin Concierge

February 10, 2023

We hope you’re all doing well after the recent ice storm that hit Central Texas. With the storm now behind us, it’s time to turn our attention to the cleanup effort. As residents of Homes in Austin, Texas work together to clear away the storm debris, we’ve put together a table that provides disposal information for each locale in the area. This table will help make the cleanup process a little easier and more efficient. We’ve summarized disposal for Austin residents, but if you’re in one of the surrounding areas, look at the table below and see what resources are available in your city to help get your home back to its pre-storm state.

Storm Debris Disposal Info for Austin, Texas Homes

If you’re dealing with storm debris from the recent ice storm in Austin, here’s what you need to know. Austin and Travis County residents can drop off larger debris (tree limbs, branches, shrubs, and leaves) at the Austin Water’s Hornsby Bend Biosolids Management Plant (2210 FM 973, Austin, TX). Check their operation times for more info.

Small Branches Collection: If your branches are under 5 feet and no thicker than 3 inches, you can set them out with your weekly composting collection. Just put the branches in your green composting cart, making sure the lid fully closes. If you have extra material, place it in lawn and leaf bags or a reusable container and set it out beside the cart on your next scheduled collection day. If the small branches don’t fit in the green cart, bundle them up (no heavier than 30 pounds) and place them beside the cart.

Large Branches Collection: For branches longer than 5 feet, you’ll need to request a special storm debris collection. Call 3-1-1 (or 512-974-2000) or use the Austin 3-1-1 mobile app or austin311.org to make the request. Place the limbs at the curb ready for collection and ARR crews will assess and collect them as soon as possible.

Tips for Setting Out Debris:

  • Don’t block fire hydrants.
  • Branches and limbs should be 5-15 feet long.
  • Cut down tree trunks thicker than 8 inches in diameter to 3 feet or less.
  • Stack debris loosely along the curb, no more than 15 feet wide and 4 feet high, with cut ends facing the street.
  • Don’t block the sidewalk or extend into the street.
  • Keep items 5 feet away from trash carts, mailboxes, fences, water meters, telephone boxes, and parked cars. Don’t place items under low-hanging tree limbs or power lines.
