Clarksville Neighborhood Background Information

Introduction

Clarksville is a historic neighborhood in Central Austin, Texas, situated just west of downtown and close to Lady Bird Lake. As part of the Old West Austin Historic District, Clarksville boasts a distinct character that sets it apart from neighboring areas such as Tarrytown and Enfield.

History

The neighborhood was founded by freedman Charles Clark in 1871, making it one of the oldest surviving freedomtowns west of the Mississippi River. Initially, the area was part of a tract of land owned by Texas Governor Elisha Pease, who sold it to Clark after the Civil War. Clark built a house on what is now West Tenth Street and subdivided the remaining land among other freed slaves. The Sweet Home Baptist Church, a cornerstone of the community, was founded prior to 1882.

Community Preservation

Despite historical pressures to relocate to segregated East Austin, Clarksville retained its African-American identity throughout the 20th century. Residents have fought to preserve the community's history and character. In 1976, the Clarksville Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its unique and valuable history. The Clarksville Community Development Corporation, established in the 1970s, aims to provide affordable housing and preserve the community's character.

Neighborhood Characteristics

Clarksville is known for its leafy streets, walkability, and proximity to downtown. The neighborhood is bounded by Mopac, West Lynn Street, Waterston Avenue, and West 10th Street. It features a mix of historic homes and newer structures, with many original homes still standing. The area is also home to several parks, including Clarksville Park and West Austin Park, which offer wading pools during the summer months. Zilker Park, with its lakeside hike and bike trails, beach volleyball courts, and Barton Springs Pool, is just a few blocks south.
