About Montopolis
Montopolis is a historic neighborhood located in Southeast Austin, situated south of the Colorado River and bordered by Lady Bird Lake to the north. The neighborhood is bounded by major highways including Texas State Highway 71 and U.S. Route 183, and is positioned immediately adjacent to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Montopolis carries a unique dual history: the original townsite was established in 1839 by Jesse Tannehill on the north bank of the Colorado River as an 800-acre planned community that aspired to become the capital of the Republic of Texas, but the current neighborhood developed south of the river during the Reconstruction era and into the early twentieth century. The neighborhood was officially annexed by the City of Austin beginning in 1951, with additional portions annexed through the 1970s. The historic Montopolis Bridge, a truss bridge on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as the physical and symbolic connection between the old and new Montopolis, spanning the Colorado River where El Camino Real de los Tejas once forded and the Chisholm Trail later crossed during Reconstruction.
