Jollyville is a neighborhood located in the northern part of Austin, Texas, situated approximately eighteen miles north of Austin in southwestern Williamson County along US Highway 183 and Rattan Creek. Founded in 1866 by Confederate veteran John Grey Jolly, who established a blacksmith shop and store, the area was first settled in the 1840s by Henry Rhodes, who received a land grant of approximately 1,000 acres from the Republic of Texas. The neighborhood was originally a small, lightly settled farming community with only about twenty families in 1960, but experienced rapid suburban growth beginning in the 1970s as Austin's expansion reached the area. Today, Jollyville has evolved into a suburban community with a population exceeding 20,000 residents in the greater Jollyville area, though it remains characterized by its historical roots and community identity. The neighborhood straddles the border between Travis and Williamson counties and was annexed by Austin, though it maintains distinct boundaries along the newer four-lane highway that runs through the area.
