Sunset Valley is a small, independent city located within Travis County, Texas, completely surrounded by the city of Austin. It spans approximately 1.4 square miles and is situated about 5 miles southwest of downtown Austin. The area prides itself on its unique, rural feel and independent residential identity, despite being enveloped by Austin's urban landscape.
History and Development
The history of Sunset Valley dates back to the early 19th century, with the first land transactions occurring in 1835 under the jurisdiction of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. The area was initially developed in the early 1950s by brothers M.H. and Clarence Flournoy, who acquired a large tract of land to establish a subdivision. The community officially became the Village of Sunset Valley on September 17, 1954, after a successful incorporation vote.
